The charity's name is inspired by the longevity of the Sessile oak, a paramount species in the temperate rainforest. These beautiful trees can take 300 years to grow, can live and thrive for over 400 years and can take 300 years to slowly die, rot and return their goodness to the soil. The Trust believes that if we are truly to heal our natural habitats, we need to think like an oak tree – over a thousand-year timespan.

Lizzie and Merlin want Cabilla to be a place of ecological balance as well as where people can go to find balance in their minds and bodies having experienced first hand the power of these woods.

It's hoped Cabilla  will be a demonstration site for all rainforest restorers. Merlin and Lizzie are looking to triple the size of that forest from 100 to 300 acres and restore equilibrium to the species mix found within it.

In mid 2024 I started what I hope will be a long term project to document a British Rainforest on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall after  GoodWorks  introduced me to Thousand Year Trust  founders Merlin and Lizzie Hanbury-Tenison. They are  on a mission to restore Britain's rainforests which once covered 20% of the British Isles starting with their own project Cabilla Valley.
